The Analytical Report “Trends in Digital Learning Platforms” is published within UNESCO IITE–Shanghai Open University joint project “Promoting ICT Capacity Building and Open Education in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies”. The Report explores how emerging global, regional, and national trends in learning analytics-driven and artificial intelligence-powered learning technologies assist higher education institutions (HEIs) in analysing student behaviour, predicting performance and providing tailored interventions and personalized education.
The publication is structured into three sections. The Introduction highlights the relevance of the comprehensive desk research conducted, provides the context and the theoretical review, and the symbiotic role of Learning Analytics (LA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.
The Case Analysis section synthesizes various LA-driven and AI-powered learning platforms and tools that have been developed for personalization of learning and student success, focusing on LA tools, adaptive learning platforms, GenAI-powered tutoring systems, student support systems, and career-building systems. It also highlights collaborative implementations and cross-sector partnerships (academia, industry, government), aimed at building AI-literate and AI-competent communities; supporting HEIs in co-creating academic programmes and new curricula; establishing AI skilling centres, research and innovation centres for providing AI-powered solutions.
The Conclusion summarizes the findings and provides higher education stakeholders with recommendations on integrating data-driven AI in Education (AIEd) technologies to improve personalization of learning, build a robust digital learning ecosystem, adopting useful strategies for student success and providing equitable and inclusive learning for all (SDG 4) in an ethical and responsible manner.
