The Second All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Media and Information Literacy in Russia: a Multidisciplinary Perspective” was held at the Higher School of Economics on November 20, 2024. The event was organized by the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme and the Institute of Media of the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” with the support of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO and the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation within the framework of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week annually held by UNESCO.
The conference was attended by more than 100 specialists from 29 regions of Russia – leading Russian scientists, experts in the field of media and information literacy (MIL) and information technology, researchers and teachers working in the field of journalism and media education, heads and representatives of government bodies, mass media, educational institutions, business structures and public figures.
The opening session of the conference was moderated by Alexander Sharikov, the initiator of the event, Professor of the Institute of Media of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. Opening remarks were made by Ernest Matskyavichyus, Director of the Institute of Media of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and Sergey Bakeikin, Chairman of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme, Director-General of the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre.
The conference began with a plenary session “Formation of Media and Information Literacy as an Interdisciplinary Area of Theory and Practice”, where key reports were presented by Abdusalam Guseinov, the Acting Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Yuri Baturin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Elena Vartanova, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov; Andrey Bystritsky, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industries of the Higher School of Economics; Mikhail Chernysh, Director of the Federal Research Sociological Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The conference program also included discussions in the following sessions and round tables:
- Formation of media and information literacy: a philosophical view
- Formation of media and information literacy: sociological and psychological views
- Artificial intelligence in education and media and information literacy
- Formation of media and information literacy of students: the experience of Russian universities
Tatyana Murovana, a programme specialist at the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, moderated the session discussing the challenges and opportunities of using new technologies in education from the standpoint of media and information literacy. She also presented on the topic “Preservation of digital information as a competence of media and information literacy”, where she highlighted the representation of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values related to issues of long-term preservation of digital content in the structure of MIL competencies, and pointed out some opportunities for improving the situation in the area of digital preservation related to the developments in the level of media and information literacy of both specialists in the field of digital preservation and all citizens.
