ITU Europe and CIS Regional Workshop on Mainstreaming ICT Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities

IITE was invited to participate in the Europe and CIS Regional Workshop on Mainstreaming ICT Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities. The workshop, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), took place on 1-2 November 2010 in Odessa, Ukraine.

Leading specialists from various institutions, including ITU, G3ict, UNIC, Microsoft, Danish Broadcasting Corporation, National Disability Authority of  Ireland, etc., dealing with issues of ICT accessibility for disabled, took part in the event.The following topics of accessibility were discussed by the participants of the workshop: accessibility standards, personalized learning approaches for disabled students, regionalandnational strategies on promoting accessibility, etc.

Ms Natalia Tokareva, UNESCO IITE Policy and Research team specialist, made a presentation “UNESCO IITE initiatives on promoting accessibility and raising quality of education for persons with disabilities by means of ICTs” which focused on the Institute’s project activities in the field. Ms N. Tokareva informed the participants about the accumulated experience by the IITE, its potential and resources. The main accent of the presentation was made on Institute’s two current projects – development of the policy brief “ICT for Inclusion: reaching more students more effectively” and the Review of best practices “ICT in education for people with disabilities” (elaborated in close cooperation with the European Agency for Development of Special Needs Education).
