UNESCO has been monitoring school closures since early March and documenting national responses, including through virtual ministerial meetings and webinars bringing together a community of practice.

This blog provides a snapshot of some of the measures taken by countries to address their immediate challenges. UNESCO convenes an emergency meeting of the Principals of Multilateral Education Partners to join hands in education response to COVID-19 pandemic

Twelve multilateral organizations met virtually on 24 March 2020 at UNESCO’s call to an emergency meeting of the Multilateral Education Platform (MEP) on COVID-19 education response. The MEP was launched in July 2019 in the face of the global learning crisis and the urgency to accelerate progress towards SDG4. The MEP member representatives shared their respective COVID-19 responses and agreed to join forces to respond to the global challenge of education disruption. (UNESCO)

Coronavirus COVID-19 and Higher Education: Impact and Recommendations

There is an urgent need for Governments and institutions to plan appropriate measures to protect citizens’ health, avoiding the violation of the right to education, in those countries where the epidemic is beginning to appear. At all levels of education, the authorities must ensure measures that encourage students to continue learning, despite the temporary closure of educational institutions. (UNESCO IESALC)

COVID-19 : UNESCO convenes Education Webinar on equity in schooling

It takes a village to educate a child, and even more so in times of distance learning, when schooling goes virtual. A whole community approach and stronger partnerships are needed to make distance learning inclusive: this was one of the key takeaways from UNESCO’s first webinar on the educational response to COVID-19, which drew government officials, practitioners and experts from over 50 countries on 20 March 2020. Distant learning solutions

UNESCO prepared a list of educational applications, platforms and resources that aim to help parents, teachers and school administrators facilitate student learning and provide social care and interaction during periods of school closure. Most of the solutions curated are free and many cater to multiple languages. (UNESCO)

COVID-19 Educational Disruption and Response

The number of children, youth and adults not attending schools or universities because of COVID-19 is soaring. Governments all around the world have closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the global pandemic.

UNESCO is providing immediate support to countries as they work to minimize the educational disruption and facilitate the continuity of learning, especially for the most vulnerable. (UNESCO)
