UNESCO mobilizes 122 countries to promote open science and reinforced cooperation in the face of COVID-19

UNESCO on 30 March hosted an online meeting of representatives of ministries in charge of science all over the world. Participants included 77 ministers, including governmental secretaries representing a total of 122 countries. The objective of the meeting was to exchange views on the role of international cooperation in science and increased investment in the context of COVID-19. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay called on governments to reinforce scientific cooperation and integrate open science in their research programmes to prevent and mitigate global crises. Launching the crash course on online tutoring for teachers

The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) designed the free crash course “Be an Online Tutor in 24 Hours”, the Russian version of the course was produced with the help of UNESCO IITE to be used by educators in CIS countries.

COL launches OER4COVID support initiative

Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the OER Foundation with supporting partners UNESCO IITE and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) have joined forces to establish an Open Educational Resources for COVID (OER4COVID) community. The goal is to assist education institutions around the world, especially in the Commonwealth, to transition to online learning. OER4COVID will host a series of synchronous sessions and online trainings to build capacity among educators to design and develop OER-enabled online courses. (COL)

COVID-19 Webinar: A new world for teachers, education’s frontline workers

On 27 March, UNESCO dedicated its second Covid-19 education response webinar to those on the frontlines of ensuring learning continuity: some 63 million affected teachers in 165 countries, along with education personnel. Bringing together participants from all regions, the seminar shed light on a wide range of issues, from the provision of training and support for teachers to the challenge of distance teaching in remote or rural areas with weak or no internet connectivity.
