On 28 February 2019, Ms Dato’ Gail Phung, Senior Vice-President for Corporate Development, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, and Ms Kgomotso Motlotle, Administrative Director, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Botswana, visited the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) on an official mission. During the official meeting, the representatives of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) and Mr Tao Zhan, Director of UNESCO IITE discussed the prospects for cooperation with the UNESCO IITE in the field of ICT in education for persons with disabilities and in the development of a new project “ICT for University Accessibility Network”. The meeting concluded with the signing a Memorandum of Understanding between UNESCO IITE and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT).
The Memorandum confirmed the intentions of the Parties to collaborate in the investigation of the potential of ICT in education for persons with disabilities and to pilot the advanced technologies, particularly interactive and online tools as well as necessary assistive technologies, to enhance teaching, learning and social inclusion.
The Parties agreed to develop the joint UNESCO IITE/LUCT project “ICT for University Accessibility Network” aimed at social and educational inclusion of students with disabilities, by promoting access to information and educational materials by means of ICT. In the framework of the project, the Parties will identify, pilot and support emerging approaches and practices used in technology-mediated education for persons with disabilities in the most effective targeted countries where LUCT has campuses. The Parties also agreed to establish on the basis of the LUCT campuses IT resource centers for students with disabilities and equip them with appropriate hard- and software. The project, developed in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Education 2030 Agenda, will enable students with disabilities to become active knowledge constructors and global citizens who participate fully in all aspects of society.
