Since the end of August 2025, the National Centre for Professional Development “Orleu” under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been conducting trainings for teachers based on the online course “Learning Process with AI: Generative Models and the Art of Prompt Engineering”. In a relatively short period, about 252,000 teachers have been enrolled, over 181,000 of whom have successfully completed the programme and passed certification. Primary school teachers, STEM subjects and foreign language teachers were among the most actively involved.
The course content provided by the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education has been fully adapted to the educational context of the country. The teacher professional development programme is aimed at developing the skills of effective and ethical use of AI by teachers in the educational process.
The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in its consistent work on the implementation of artificial intelligence in education is guided by the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers, which provides for three progression levels: acquire→deepen→create. UNESCO IITE provides methodological support for these activities in the field of continuous development of AI competencies of teachers.
The National Centre “Orleu”, a key provider of the national system of continuous professional development of teachers, notes that teachers have shown great interest in learning new competencies, which is confirmed by their active participation in the course and positive feedback.
UNESCO IITE is developing open, free online Russian-language courses for teachers on various aspects of the use of generative artificial intelligence within the framework of the joint project “Digital Transformation of Higher Education in Central Asia”, implemented in cooperation with the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI). IITE invites everyone to participate in training at any convenient time:
“Generative AI as a Teaching Tool in Higher Education”
“Prompt Engineering for Higher Education Teachers”
The author of the courses is Ivan Pechishchev, assistant professor at the Perm State University. To access the courses, please register on the platform of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) www.iioe.org
