In October-November 2023, on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education conducts a series of online trainings on media literacy for young people. During the trainings, it is planned to discuss such topics as the development of critical thinking and ensuring cybersecurity, communication in the digital environment and protection from cyberbullying, and the use of online resources to build a healthy lifestyle.
How do people understand the content, meaning and significance of information, and how and by whom it is produced and disseminated? How are information and media used (or not used)? What is “critical thinking”? These and other issues related to improving people’s interaction with information resources, digital platforms and social networks, gadgets and technologies were discussed on October 5, 2023, at the first training in this series. The training, entitled “What is media literacy and why is it needed,” was conducted by Tatyana Murovana, Programme Specialist at UNESCO IITE. The event was attended by some 80 middle and high school students from various regions of Kazakhstan.
The trainings are dedicated to the celebration of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2023. Sessions are held online on the Zoom platform with broadcast on the official page of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Facebook.
