UNESCO invites educational and cultural organizations, libraries, museums, arts institutions, content creators and communities to join the global movement for Media and Information Literacy (MIL). Commemorated every year, Global Media and Information Literacy Week is a major worldwide occasion to raise awareness, celebrate progress, and mobilize stakeholders toward achieving Media and Information Literacy for all.
This year, Global MIL Week 2026, taking place from 24 to 30 October, adopts a decentralized and participatory approach. Guided by the theme “We All Play a Part – Media and Information Literacy for the People,” UNESCO recognizes that advancing MIL is a shared commitment that depends on the contributions of every sector of society.
Stakeholders are encouraged to organize and register their own activities. Events may take place online or in person and can include workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions, training sessions, youth activities, or community campaigns focused on media and information literacy. Activities are welcomed throughout October and November 2026.
By hosting an event, your organization can:
- promote critical thinking, digital citizenship and responsible information use within your community;
- foster intercultural dialogue, respect for diversity and freedom of expression;
- highlight the vital role of cultural and educational institutions in safeguarding, preserving, and providing equitable access to reliable information.
For inspiration and alignment with global priorities, stakeholders are encouraged to take note of the official interconnected flagship events, which include:
- Cairo, Egypt: UNESCO Chairs and Academic Cooperation on MIL (18–20 October)
- Nairobi, Kenya: Digital Content Creators and MIL (26–27 October)
- Montreal, Canada: ORBICOM 2026 Annual International Conference (26–30 October)
- New Delhi, India: MIL and Formal Education (26–27 October)
- Abuja, Nigeria: Africa Plays a Part (28–29 October)
