In January of 2000, the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education held expert meeting titled Information and Communication Technologies in Education for People with Special Needs. UNESCO IITE invited specialists in the field of education for special-need people.
Participants from 6 countries (UK, Slovenia, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, Russia), including several representatives of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), as well as National Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, took part in the Meeting.
The Meeting was dedicated to discussing the UNESCO role and policy in extension of application of ICTs in special needs education and to working out recommendations on organizing IITE UNESCO activity in this field.
