OpenEMIS Capacity Building in Mauritius

EMIS webinars

The UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education completed a series of webinars focused on administering Educational Management Information Systems (EMIS) in Mauritius. The staff members of the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology took part in training sessions on how to manage general education institutions using the OpenEMIS system.

UNESCO IITE assists the Ministry within the framework of the project titled “Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovations to strengthen Inclusion and Equity of Education in Africa” implemented with the support of Chengdu Culture and Tourism Development Group LLC. Among others, the project activities contribute to strengthening national EMIS for decision-making and IT technical capacity building.

Between July and September 2022, eight sessions on managing educational data at the national, zonal and school levels using OpenEMIS Cloud Edition were organised for the Ministry representatives. During the webinars, the staff members could use a safe trial environment to learn about the functionality of the system. UNESCO IITE commissioned Mr. Khindol Madraimov, a former head of the IT Department of the Ministry of Preschool Education of Uzbekistan, to conduct training sessions on the following topics:

  • Managing administrator and user rights for OpenEMIS.
  • Using of OpenEMIS modules: OpenEMIS Core, Integrator, Data Manager and Dashboard.
  • Configuring existing OpenEMIS modules, developing custom reports, indicators and dashboards
  • Using OpenEMIS APIs and WebHooks.

The ongoing project on strengthening national EMIS is a follow-up of the mission to Mauritius in 2019. UNESCO IITE in collaboration with UNESCO HQ organised a five-day EMIS technical support meeting with Government officials. The outcomes of the mission were the EMIS Needs Assessment country report and the EMIS technical design document.

UNESCO and its bodies aim to facilitate strategic decision-making and help educational stakeholders manage education at all levels. More resources on EMIS are available here:
