As part of the reform of school education in Armenia, classes on healthy lifestyles have become mandatory for pupils in grades 5-11. Seventeen academic hours are allocated annually. During these lessons, specially trained teachers discuss with students a wide range of topics, including maturation and development, healthy eating and physical activity, safety, mental and emotional health, interpersonal relationships, disease prevention, reproductive health, and prevention of bad habits, violence and bullying.
The classes are conducted in a training format, which facilitates open discussion of issues of concern to pupils and the formation of solid knowledge, practical skills and values necessary for leading a healthy and responsible lifestyle.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, with the support of UNESCO, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), national experts in the fields of education, health and psychology developed methodological manuals with detailed lesson plans. All the manuals have been tested in pilot schools and are available for use on the website of the National Center for Education Development and Innovation, as well as on the UNESCO IITE website.
